"In every Limitation, there is the potential for Breakthrough."    ~Jason

Jason has spent the majority of his life overcoming physical and mental obstacles.  He was born October 20, 1977 with half of his right arm.  His dad got him into Tae Kwon Do at age 4 to help overcome issues of balance and coordination from his right arm.  He was really off balance for the first four or five months and would always fall on his back during the spinning back-kick. He never gave up, and then one day, he didn't fall.  He continued to improve, compete in tournaments, and then achieved his black belt at age 12.

On August 3, 1997 Jason suffered severe injuries to his face and broke his humerus in his right arm.  Then, just a few months later, still recovering from his injuries on December 6th, Jason was riding in the passenger seat of a car when it was struck by a drunk driver on his side.  He suffered traumatic head injuries and was in a coma for two weeks.  (Car pictured below)

Recovery was very challenging.  Jason worked with a speech therapist to learn how to talk again.  His memory was severely damaged; he couldn't remember where rooms in his own house were located.  He knew his athletic dreams were over because he couldn't risk any sports where he might take a hit to the head.  He was devastated at the thought of not being able to enjoy and excel in sports as he always had.  At that point, he made up his mind that he was not going to live his life limited and in pain.  He began self-guided rehabilitation to regain his physical strength.  His mother, a neuromuscular therapist, worked with him to regain his range of motion.  His father and step-dad encouraged him to keep pushing.

In 2001, just about 3 1/2 years after his accidents, he reached out to his former Tae Kwon Do Master to train him in the martial art that had helped him overcome balance issues and physical limitations as a child.  Jason trained hard for 3 weeks, entered the State Games of North Carolina and won the Gold Medal.  (Pictured below on the right)

Once again, having achieved an athletic success, Jason was motivated to pursue one of his other dreams: going to college. Jason enrolled in NC A&T University.  Once there, he realized he needed a sport to keep him engaged and motivated in his studies.  He thought long and hard about what he could do while limiting the potential for additional head injuries. It came to him that he was well suited for Kicker on the football team as kickers rarely get hit, and his experience in Tae Kwon Do would be a huge asset.  He began training on the campus practice fields daily.  He made it through the first two cuts, but was cut in the third and final round.  He trained for another year, even in the rain by himself so the coaches would see his dedication. That next year he made the team.  It took a while for him to make it on the field, but in his first appearance, he broke the "hang-time" record for their Conference.  He transferred to Guilford College to extend his time on the field before later returning to A&T to finish his Bachelor's Degree.  (Pictures below in uniform for NC A&T University and Guilford College football.)

Jason was blessed with two beautiful daughters, and again, had to adapt to changes in life.  He realized he needed to slow down and focus on being a good father.  Part of that job is teaching his girls a very valuable lesson: that if he can do it, they can do anything!  (Pictured below with daughters Isabelle and Savannah Lee)
